In-class Peer Tutoring
On-on-one instruction has been shown to produce learning gains far above those achieved in any other instructional method. This project seeks to implement in-class peer tutoring (ICPT) to support student learning in basic engineering science classrooms and to increase retention of students in engineering programs. For this project ICPT is defined as trained and more experienced students assisting students with active learning exercises during lecture.
Goals
The goals of this project include:
- Implement an in-class peer tutoring (ICPT) program in statics and mechanics of materials at two land grant universities.
- Determine the relationship between the peer tutoring program and student and tutor attitudes about retention, within the framework of social capital
Activities
The in-class peer tutoring program includes tutor training, in-class tutoring, and out-of-class weekly tutoring. In a typical classroom setting, the instructor presents a mini-lecture and then assigns small groups to complete exercises together related to the lecture topic. Peer tutors, who have been coached on the exercise, serve as coaches for the groups as they work on the exercise. The groups are also assigned other work to be completed outside of class, at times when the tutors are available. The development of social capital - social interactions, norms, and the value of these networks and norms
- will occur within groups as well as between students and the peer tutors. Through surveys and semi-structured interviews data will be collected to determine the social capital developed and its impact on student performance and retention.
Results
More than 80% of students in ICPT courses agree with the statement, "I wish I had peer tutors in my other courses." More than 70% agree with the statement, "I learn more because of the peer tutors." The tutoring program has been shown to influence students' self-efficacy through mastery experiences in which students are successful in solving problems during lecture, and through vicarious experiences, where students have positive role models in the classroom. Finally, students report that tutors are a vital resource in learning and are especially important for courses that are challenging and that do not have other resources available.
