Leading practitioners in engineering education scholarship as well as the Journal for Engineering Education have brought to the fore the importance of scholarly research in engineering education. Going forward the next wave of engineering professors will increasingly need to pursue research-based innovation in teaching.

This page provides a subset of job opportunities for professors and post-docs in engineering. It is intended to show the variety of jobs in this area. Increasingly, the requirement for teaching excellence and educational research is a prerequisite for employment.

Assistant/Associate Professor,                          Department of Engineering and Technology Education        College of Engineering, Utah State University

PROGRAM: 

Utah State University (www.usu.edu) is a premier student-centered land-grant and Carnegie extension university that fosters the principle that academics come first, by cultivating diversity of thought and culture, and by serving the public through learning, discovery, and engagement.  The Department of Engineering and Technology Education in the College of Engineering (http://www.ete.usu.edu) offers Bachelors and Masters degrees in engineering and technology education and a PhD in engineering education.

 The department also houses the National Science Foundation National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (www.ncete.org). The Center is a collaborative network of scholars with backgrounds in technology education, engineering, and related fields. The Center’s mission is to build capacity in technology education and to improve the understanding of the learning and teaching of high school students and teachers as they apply engineering design processes to technological problems.

DESCRIPTION:

Primary responsibilities will be to conduct engineering education research and to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering education.  The successful candidate will be required to obtain external funding, and conduct research in engineering education.  In addition, the candidate may be asked to advise students and serve on masters and doctoral committees.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Earned doctorate in a Mechanical or Civil Engineering, a STEM education related field, cognitive science, or educational and psychological research, by August 15, 2010.

2. BS and/or MS in an engineering discipline.

3. Strong background in educational research.

4. Successful teaching experience in areas related to engineering.

5. Ability to conduct and disseminate research in the areas of engineering education.

6. Ability to write grants to support scholarly activities.

7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills

8.Ability to teach foundational engineering courses such as Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials and Engineering Numerical Methods.  

 To be considered at the associate professor level, the following additional qualifications must be met:

 1. An established research agenda with a publication record to support the agenda (in the area of engineering education).

2. A record of extramural funding.

3. A record of excellence in research, teaching, and supervising graduate students.

 Preference will be given to a candidate with a background in engineering education, statistical analysis research, quantitative psychology research, or a closely related field, and/or educational research methods.

Assistant Professor - Arizona State University at Tempe

To take advantage of emerging Standards for Engineering Education in K-12 settings, to implement the newly developed Arizona standards for engineering content in K-12 formal and informal learning environments, and to capitalize on the rapid expansion of engineering education research, development and certification programs, the Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education at Arizona State University is seeking an innovative and energetic faculty member to come in on the ground floor of our new engineering education doctoral program. The successful candidate will provide critical synergy with faculty in the Ira A. Fulton school of Engineering and the College of Technology and Innovation as well as the Mary Lou Fulton School. This hire will take a leadership role in the school's engineering education program and teach in Engineering Education, STEM Education and other areas according to her or his expertise. The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level so that the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build, grow and integrate effectively with inter- and trans-disciplinary research and development groups across the ASU campuses.

Research and Policy Associate - INSPIRE at Purdue University

The Research & Policy Associate's primary responsibilities will be to be INSPIRE's liaison with local schools, state and national STEM education policy bodies in promoting and coordinating joint efforts to raise the profile of INSPIRE (Institute for P-12 Engineering Research and Learning) and promote STEM education particularly in regards to engineering education and to actively support, develop, maintain, and enhance an active, coordinated and seamless research agenda in connection with ongoing efforts of P-12 engineering education and outreach program in accordance with the vision/mission and goals of the INSPIRE institute for P-12 engineering research and learning at the School of Engineering Education.    The Research & Policy Associate will mirror the established department by providing an outstanding, multi-faceted program, which engages faculty, K-12 educators, students, and the community.

Tenure-Track Faculty Position - Engineering Education: University of New Haven

The Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven has an open position for an assistant professor of engineering, tenure-track.  We are seeking someone with a strong interest in teaching and engineering education research to participate in the further development and assessment of our innovative, integrated curriculum, which forms the foundation for our ABET-accredited engineering programs (see attached for more information). We hope to fill the position within the next month or two, with a preferred starting date of late summer 2009.

Visiting professor opportunity: Engineering Education Innovation Center, Ohio State

We are seeking faculty who might be interested in spending part or all of an academic year as a Visiting Faculty member at Ohio State University through our Engineering Education Innovation Center (EEIC) beginning Autumn 2009 .

The EEIC is the academic home for our first-year engineering program, multi-disciplinary capstone design, a writing center, engineering graphics and programs for faculty research and development around teaching and learning. The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Faculty position

P-12 Technology Education/Pre-Engineering Faculty Position Department of Technological Studies Invites Applications for a Tenure-Track Faculty Position

The Department of Technological Studies in the School of Engineering at The College of New Jersey invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position starting September 2009. An earned doctorate in Technology Education or a closely related field is required. Each successful candidate must present evidence of experience and capabilities in Technology Education with a preference for P-12 pre-engineering. Additional experience with undergraduate teaching, curriculum and laboratory development, research, directing student design projects, involving undergraduate students in research, first-year engineering education, and potential for national leadership in the field is highly desirable.

The Department of Technological Studies has created one of the first majors in technology education with a pre-engineering focus and is establishing a national dialog between engineering and education. Our vision is to graduate the next generation of educational leaders with pedagogical and pre-engineering content knowledge and capabilities necessary to create technologically and pre-engineering literate children. Graduates will be able to gain qualifications to teach in Project Lead The Way (PLTW) programs. The Department consists of 5 faculty members, a Center for STEM Education (over $13 million in research over the past 12 years), publishes TIES Magazine http://www.tiesmagazine.org/, and offers four year programs that lead to Bachelor of Science degrees in Technology Education/Pre-Engineering, M/S/T Elementary Education, M/S/T Early Childhood Education, M/S/T Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education, and an M.A.T. in Technology Education.
